Texas State wins second Bubas Cup in school history

The State of Texas hosted the second Vic Bubas Cup on Wednesday, the Sun Belt Conference announced.

The Cup is awarded to the top sports section of the conference based on a points system.

“On behalf of our entire sports department, I am incredibly proud and grateful for the hard work and dedication paid by our student-athletes and coaches this year,” said Athletics Director Don Coryell. “Winning the Vic Bubas Cup and representing everything it represents is an honor for the State of Texas, the campus community and the Bobcat nation. We achieved this goal in August, and with the help of the championships we won and the fight of all the Bobcats, we achieved the level of being the best of the Sun Belt. “We are ready to bring the Bubas Cup back to San Marcos.”

“We are honored to recognize the successful 2021-22 season of the Bobcats with the second Vic Bubas Cup,” said Sun Belt Conference commissioner Keith Gill. “This award is a testament to the dedication of student-athletes, coaches, athletic staff, and the leadership of Texas State University.”

The Bobcats finished the game with 123 points, beating South Alabama in second place with 122. The Crimson and Gold earned high scores by winning regular-season men’s basketball and baseball championships and winning volleyball and indoor men’s and women’s volleyball.

The Cup was named after Sun Belt’s first commissioner, Vic Bubas, who served the league for 14 years, beginning on October 6, 1976. The Sun Belt expanded from six to eight teams and from four to 10 sports awarded under during his term of office. Bubas died in April 2018 at the age of 91.

Texas State won its first Bubas Cup in 2019. The university is now one of only two conference schools to have won the Cup twice since 2013-14 – the year the Bobcats joined the Sun Belt.
