Elk Grove police arrested a 17-year-old suspect who allegedly hit a 53-year-old pedestrian and then fled the scene on the night of March 29th. Authorities said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sacramento County coroners did not identify the victim until the time of publication.
The incident was reported around 8:30 p.m. near the corner of Elk Grove Boulevard and Shorelake Drive in the Lakeside area near Interstate-5.
Elk Grove police spokesman Jason Jimenez reported that police were informed that a person was lying on a street. Officers rushed in and determined that a vehicle had hit him.
Investigators believe the victim was crossing Elk Grove Boulevard when the driver, who was traveling west Elk Grove Boulevard, ran over him. Jimenez said the pedestrian was not at a pedestrian crossing.
The driver of the suspicious vehicle went to the Elk Grove police station a few hours after the collision. Jiménez said that the authorities knew that this vehicle had a passenger who, at the time of the incident, was suffering non-life-threatening injuries. A relative took the passenger to a local hospital after the collision, he said. Officers later contacted this person there.
Investigators believe alcohol or drugs were not factors in the incident, Jimenez said.
The suspect was arrested on charges of manslaughter and committing a felony of assault and escape that resulted in injuries and death. He was booked into the juvenile room.
