Swimmer dies at Thousand Steps Beach in Laguna Beach – Orange County Register

The body of an unidentified female swimmer was recovered by OC Lifeguards from the waters off Thousand Steps Beach in Laguna Beach shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, officials said.

According to Laguna Beach Police Lieutenant Cornelius Ashton, the woman was seen struggling near another swimmer near the southern end of the beach near the sea cave around 4:49 p.m.

“The lifeguards were able to rescue one, but not the other,” he said. Wednesday’s waves were about 3-4 feet high.

After the woman disappeared in the water, other agencies came to her aid, including the OC Lifeguards, the Diving Team and the Laguna Beach Lifeguards. The Laguna Beach fire and police were on the scene, as were the Orange County Fire Department and Orange County Sheriff’s Department helicopter Duke and its port patrols.

The Orange County coroner was summoned to the beach at Three Arches Bay. This beach winds down from the cliffs that separate it from Thousand Steps Beach.

Ashton said the identity and age of the female swimmer had not been released until the family was notified.
