Sweetened and unsweetened coffee consumption associated with lower death risk

A team study found that compared to coffee drinkers, adults who drank an average amount (1.5 to 3.5 cups per day) of unhealthy coffee or sweetened sugar were less likely to die over 7 years. The results of those who used artificial sweeteners were not immediately clear. The search results are published in Annals of Internal Medicine.

Previous studies have noted health effects copy they found that drinking coffee was associated with a lower risk of death but did not differentiate between bad coffee and coffee consumed with sugar or artificial sweeteners.

Researchers from the Southern Medical University of Guangzhou, China used data from the British Biobank Health Survey to evaluate the association of sweet, sweet, and unhealthy coffee with any cause and private deaths. More than 171,000 participants from the UK without known heart disease or cancer were interviewed extensively about dietary factors and health characteristics to assess coffee drinking habits.

  • The authors found that over the next 7 years, participants who drank any significant amount of coffee were 16 to 21% less likely to die than participants who did not drink coffee.
  • They also found that participants who drank 1.5 to 3.5 cups of regular coffee and sugar were 29 to 31% more likely to die than non-coffee participants.
  • The authors noted that adults who drank sweetened coffee with sugar added about 1 teaspoon of sugar per cup of coffee on average.
  • The results were inconclusive for participants who used artificial sweeteners in their coffee.

Any editor accompanying my editors Annals of Internal Medicine notes that while coffee has characteristics that can make health benefits possible, complex changes including the most difficult to measure differences in social status, diet, and other lifestyle factors may influence the study.

The authors added that the participants’ data were at least 10 years old and were collected from a country where tea had become a similar beverage. They warn that the average amount of sugar in each cup of coffee listed in this study is less than the special beverages in the popular coffee restaurants, and many coffee consumers may drink instead other beverages that make comparisons of non-drinkers more difficult. . Based on this information, doctors can tell patients that there is no need for more coffee drinkers to eliminate alcohol from their diet but to be careful about special calorie coffee.
