Sweet corn return celebrates 30th anniversary on Memorial Day

Rue and Gwen Gibson Agricultural Market (5368 N. Chestnut Ave.) will welcome the return of its most famous product when sweet corn is released on 08:00 Monday 30 May.

Buyers can buy 3 ears for $ 2 in the market, which also offers a wide variety of fresh, student products and products.

Two mobile shopping stations outside the north side of the store will host crowds on the opening day who want to buy corn in bulk 10 ears for $ 8.50, until stocks run out.

“Sweet Corn Start Day is a great way to start the summer every year,” said Mark Salwasser, Fresno State Farm Director. “It’s also a great way for our community to see the wide variety of fresh and quality produce coming from our students working on the farm. “Just like our lessons, this hands-on experience develops skills they can use in their careers as they fuel Central Valley and beyond.”

Both yellow and white corn varieties will be available and the market will please customers who understand that the availability of the 60 acres of corn grown on campus can sometimes vary due to weather conditions.

The history of sweet corn on campus dates back to 1981 when a faculty member and students planted a test plant on campus. The following year, it was sold for the first time on the corner of Chestnut and Barstow avenues next to the 1,000-acre campus farm.

The market will extend the summer schedule to a seven-day summer program starting Monday 30 May until August and daily hours follow: 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday to Friday. Saturday 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sundays.

Customers can now enjoy a mix of on-campus products including apricots, cucumbers, grapefruits, green beans, nectarines, oranges, peaches and squash. Peppers and tomatoes are likely to arrive in early June and other products such as table grapes will follow in July.

The Fresno State Winery will offer a discount on many of its wines – 2018 vintage at Malbec, Petite Verdot, Sargent Zinfandel and Pinot Noir Russian River wines. Guests can also enjoy canned red wine on the back door, ideal for summer barbecues, picnics and other outdoor activities.

Popular meat products The market includes over 30 varieties of sausages, dried handmade salami, snack products and popular pieces of meat. New packages of minced beef of five pounds will be available in the meat case, while by mid-June the combined specialties with tripe, steak and sausage for grilling will arrive.

The creamy campus has added two flavors of ice cream – pineapple batter and cake – among its 20 flavors on the market available in cone, pint and 1.5 liter sizes. Students produce ice cream and cheese from campus dairy milk.

Nuts and caramel products are also available, and food and nutrition science staff will offer baked goods and foods such as a new cucumber salad from campus products.

Outdoor and indoor plants will be available from campus nursery on campus.
