Suspected DUI driver crashes car into community pool full of kids in Sanger

SANGER, California (KFSN) – Sanger mom Rafaela Marin could not believe that a summer night bath for her teenage son would end like this.

Sanger police say it was around 8:30 a.m. Thursday night when a car crossed two gates and plunged into the deep end of the Sanger community pool, losing dozens of swimmers who were on the shallow end of enjoying a family swim night. .

Rafaela is grateful that no one was injured and her son saw the car coming.

“They heard some tires screaming, some people shouting and that’s when they looked up and saw the car coming towards them,” he said.

Teenage lifeguards are hailed as heroes after they took action to help people in the car.

“The chief lifeguard on duty was the one who jumped in quickly, pulled the fence post that was knocked out and jumped to the front of the car and hit the windshield,” said Public Works Director John Mulligan. “He is an athletic kid, so he was able to chase this window and distract people.”

The woman behind the wheel – 23-year-old Stefania Olea. Police arrested her on DUI charges and felony criminal mischief.

This is not the first time he has been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. He was charged with DUI in 2020, along with a battery charge to a peace officer.

A crane was used to pull the car out of the pool and so far, city officials say it has not been damaged enough to keep the pool closed for the rest of the summer, but will be closed for at least a week.

The pool will now be drained and refilled. It comes at a time when the people of Sanger are facing major problems with low water pressure.

“We will refill it during times of peak stress and it will take much longer, but that should be part of our solution to make sure that when we refill it, we do not affect the rest of the community.” said Mulligan.

Iris Ocampo came to see the pool alone on Thursday afternoon, after receiving an email that her son’s swimming lessons would be canceled for the time being.

“A lot of families who can’t afford to go to other water parks or don’t have their own yard or pool, it’s very hot, so a lot of families come here,” he said.

This is especially inconvenient when the weekend of July 4 is approaching. Families will need to make other plans to cool off for the holidays.
