CARLSBAND (KUSSI) – A suspected DUI crash at Interstate 5 near the Batiquitos Lagoon early Wednesday left a young man in the Oceanside dead and another arrested and critically injured, authorities said.
The collision occurred around 2:45 a.m. when a five-passenger Honda Civic heading north drove into a Caltrans construction site south of La Costa Avenue in Carlsbad before turning left and hitting a Toyota Prius. , according to the California Highway Patrol.
The Honda then veered off the east side of the highway, climbed an embankment and overturned, throwing one of the passengers, said CHP Public Affairs Officer Hunter Gerber. The 20-year-old victim died on the spot. His name was concealed pending family notice.
Civic driver Isidrone Martinez, also 20, was arrested on suspicion of causing DUI death and taken to a trauma center for life-threatening injuries, Gerber said.
The other three Honda passengers – two other 20-year-old Oceanside residents, a man and a woman. and a 22-year-old Valley Center woman – were taken to hospitals with serious injuries.
The two Prius occupants were slightly injured in the wreck, Gerber said.
The deadly collision forced the closure of all the northern lanes of the highway in the area until just before 8 in the morning, the Motorway Patrol said.
