Authorities on Thursday publicly acknowledged the suspect in car theft was shot dead by a deputy sheriff in Otay Mesa, after allegedly destroying two lawyers.

Mizael Corrales, 31, died at the scene of the shooting at Roll Drive Square 2400 at around 9:30 a.m. Saturday, according to San Diego Police Department.

The events that led to the shooting started a little earlier, when San Diego County Sheriff’s Deputies spotted a stolen vehicle owned by three people, said Lieutenant Andra Brown.

“Deputies managed to remove two passengers from the vehicle,” Brown said. “The driver did not obey the orders of the deputies and instead; he tried to remove and hit two deputies, hitting them on the ground.”

At that point, Detective Sheriff Anthony Garcia opened fire on the fleeing driver. The vehicle continued for a short distance, hitting two patrol cars before stopping, Brown said.

Garcia, a 16-year-old member of the sheriff’s department, and another lawmaker who was hit by the suspect’s vehicle were treated for minor injuries, according to police.

The SDPD is investigating the shooting because it happened in San Diego.
