Suspect in carjacking of California police SUV is ID’d; bail set at $3 million

The man who allegedly stole the Corona police SUV with a gun was identified as Juan Daniel Perez, 30 years old.

Perez was detained in Robert Pressley Detention Center on Riverside on suspicion of Carjack and a second attempted murder. Perez is on bail instead of $ 3 million on bail. He had not been charged as of Tuesday, January 12. He will appear in court on Wednesday.

Captain Paul Mercado of the Corona Police Department said Perez is known as a member of the Riverside gang. Additional details about Perez’s past were not immediately available on Tuesday.

According to Corona police, the crime occurred around 2:00 pm on January 9, after Perez’s car collided with an unmarked police SUV on the 91 highway west near Van Buren Boulevard on the riverside.

Riverside police spokesman Ryan Reynoldsback said the bullets had been exchanged as Perez took control of the police car and ran the car, leaving the crumpled car on the freeway. No one was injured in the shooting, according to Railsback.

Police tracked the man to an apartment complex at the intersection of La Sierra and Minier Streets on Riverside, where he hid himself before being arrested.

Corona police refused to quote the ongoing investigation and say exactly how the suspect was able to ride the police car.

Warning: The video contains graphic content

In a video shot by a driver traveling in the opposite direction, he doubles on the shoulder of the freeway and then runs away to the SUV at the shooting position.

When “All I Want for Christmas Is” was played in a car that someone was filming, a woman said in the car, “He has a gun. He has a gun.”

The little girl looks back in the car, screams and begins to cry.

Someone shouts, “He got into the policeman’s car.”
