Suspect escapes police after chase on I-805

A potentially armed suspect escaped from police after being chased by an Interstate 805 on Saturday morning.

It started when San Diego police tried to stop a man driving on South 43rd Street on Alpha Street in the Shelltown neighborhood shortly after 9 a.m., said Chelsea Officer Ulibarri. The man was a known suspect from a previous incident and was potentially armed with a pistol, Ulibarri said. He had no details about the previous incident.

As police tried to stop him, he drove south on the I-805 lanes heading north, before stopping his vehicle and running to National City, he said.

“He stopped the vehicle, ran out into a gorge behind the Plaza Bonita Mall and was chased,” he said.

He said the man ran on a small hiking trail south of the highway.

“The officers formed a team and searched for him and could not find him.”

Ulibarri said several police officers were assisted by a police helicopter and police dogs in the investigation. He did not release a description of the suspect, citing an ongoing investigation.
