A 34-year-old man was arrested for allegedly fleeing after the SUV he was driving struck and killed a pedestrian in Oceanside, authorities said Wednesday.

Sean Richter of Oceanside was taken into custody Tuesday in connection with the death of 68-year-old Cecilia Xu last month, according to Oceanside police.

Sue, also an Oceanside resident, was walking on a sidewalk off Benet Street near Leepish Drive just before 8:30 a.m. on June 5, when an eastbound Honda HR-V ran off the road and struck her.

The driver then made a U-turn and fled, leaving Shu mortally wounded on the side of the road, where she died.

Detectives identified Richter as the alleged hit-and-run driver after “weeks of searching the neighborhood around the crash site” and eventually located his vehicle at an auto repair business, police spokeswoman Jennifer Atenza said.

Richter was charged on suspicion of aggravated manslaughter and hit-and-run causing death.
