A 39-year-old armed suspect allegedly robbed three Elk Grove restaurants in one week, starting July 25. Galt police chased and arrested him on Interstate 99 in Elk Grove overnight July 30 after discovering he was driving. a stolen vehicle.
John Vang was arrested for burglary, theft, vehicle theft and evading police. He was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on $250,000 bond, according to jail records. Galt police also arrested Telsae Colleado, 32, of Galt for allegedly being related to Vang.
“We are very appreciative of the work Galt PD did to find the vehicle, which led to Vang’s arrest, and allowed members of our community who were affected by his acts of violence and crime to have some sense of peace and security.” Elk Grove police spokesman Sgt. Jason Jimenez told the Citizen on August 2.
He said investigators found surveillance footage connecting Vang to the robberies. During the robbery, the suspect targeted businesses in the early hours of the morning.
Elk Grove police said Vang’s crime spree began around 5 a.m. on July 25 when he walked into the McDonald’s restaurant near the corner of Sheldon Road and East Stockton Boulevard. An employee was confronted about stealing money from a cash register. The suspect then pointed a firearm at the employee before fleeing the scene on a motorcycle.
Investigators believe Vang robbed a car rental business two days later when the store closed at 6 a.m.
The suspect then allegedly went to the closed Chipotle restaurant in the 4700 block of Elk Grove Boulevard and knocked on its door. Vang reportedly asked an employee for water and then brandished a gun after the victim answered the door. Authorities said he ordered staff to hand him money. The suspect reportedly shot into the ceiling as he left the restaurant.
On the last day of the crime, Vang allegedly drove to the McDonald’s restaurant in the 2700 block of Elk Grove Boulevard. Around 5 a.m., the suspect pointed a firearm at an employee at the front window and ordered the victim to hand over the cash drawer. He then drove off, but this time, investigators determined he was driving a Honda Accord that was stolen from a nearby restaurant early that morning. The registration number of that vehicle was then entered into a regional police information system.
That night, Galt police’s Flock camera system, which is designed to read license plates on passing cars, picked up the stolen Honda in Galt. Elk Grove police also operate Flock cameras, Jimenez told the Citizen.
A Galt police officer later located the vehicle in the 800 block of Delane Drive in downtown Galt, where they saw the suspect get into another vehicle and then flee from police.
After a brief chase, Colleado exited the Honda before Vang fled onto northbound Highway 99. Officers arrested her on charges of vehicle theft.
Galt police said Vang led a pursuit that ended when he stopped just north of Elk Grove Boulevard on the highway. Vang then turned himself in to authorities.
