Susan Negersmith murder mystery: Jerry Rosado of Millville, NJ arrested in connection with 32-year-old sexual assault

WILDWOOD, New Jersey – Authorities in New Jersey have arrested him in connection with a decades-long homicide investigation.

On Friday, Cape May County Attorney’s Office announced the arrest of 62-year-old Jerry Rosado, from Millville, New Jersey, for allegedly sexually assaulting 20-year-old Susan Negersmith in 1990.

Negersmith, from Carmel, New York, was in Wildwood with friends for Memorial Day weekend. On May 27, 1990, investigators found her body partially clothed behind a warehouse in the city.

The autopsy showed that she had been sexually assaulted before her death.

A DNA profile was found on Negersmith’s body during the 32-year investigation. In 2018, new technology helped researchers match profiles with Jerry Rosado.

“Countless law enforcement professionals and prosecutors have been working to resolve this case for the past thirty-two years, and their collective dedicated effort, combined with improvements in DNA Technology and Genetic Analysis, has led to this belated conception. “I commend the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office’s Cold Case Major Cold Case Unit for their consistent efforts to finally bring a measure of justice to the Negersmith family,” said Attorney General Jeffrey H. Sutherland.

Back in 2015, the The Negersmith family has spoken out about the case at our brother WABC station. The woman’s death was initially deemed accidental before it turned into homicide.

“And as it turned out, three years to say homicide, as it should have been from the beginning,” said the victim’s sister, Dawn Negersmith.

“She was just a young girl, 20 years old, with her friends. She did not deserve it. No one deserves it,” added Emily Negersmith, the victim’s sister.

According to court records, Rosado was arrested on Friday. He is accused of second-degree sexual assault.

A person convicted of a second-degree felony is sentenced to 5 to 10 years in New Jersey state prisons.

No murder charges have been filed in connection with the case, but authorities say further charges could be filed if additional information is available.
