Super Creepy Barnacle-Encrusted Dolls Are Washing Up on Texas Beaches

Once in a while Strange sea life washes up on the beaches. Once in a while Lego bricks already. chunks of a rocket? It can happen. And if you’re in Texas, you might be lucky enough (bad?) to stumble upon a sand-crusted, sinister-looking doll covered in barnacles.

researchers with the Mission Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve along the Gulf Coast have made a habit of collecting unsettling beach dolls. One of the newest is a doll with barnacles growing out of its eye. Mission Aransas NERR posted a video this week from the discovery of the doll. “Oh boy. The creepy doll. I know a bunch of you weirdos out there,” reserve director Jace Tunnell said in the Video. “These are things that come up all the time.”

The reserve is managed by the University of Texas Marine Science Institute and funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Reserve staff monitor wildlife and marine debris along the beaches. The beachcomber videos usually show less threatening things like stingrays, puffer fish, shrimp, bottles and plastic pellets.

“Actually, we do scientific work, but the puppets are a side effect,” Tunnell told McClatchy News in an article on Wednesday. He called one of the first to be found: the bald head of a sex doll.

A Video from the end of October 2021 featured some of the absolute scariest dolls, including one in tatters with seaweed in her hair and one with a skull on her chest.

Even spooky dolls need love. Occasionally the reserve sells its discoveries as a fundraiser, so you might consider finding a place in your home (and your nightmares) for a washed up beach doll. The next Trash-to-Treasure auction is expected to take place in early 2023. If you buy one, just don’t call it Chucky.
