Sue Bird, Eddy Alvarez to carry U.S. flags at Olympics’ opening ceremony – San Bernardino Sun

By DOUG FEINBERG

At the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games on Friday night, four-time Olympic women’s basketball gold medalist Sue Bird and baseball player Eddy Alvarez were selected as US flag bearers.

Alvarez and Bird, who won the silver medal in speed skating at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, were voted by fellow American athletes. They are the first duo to share the honor of leading the delegation to the ceremony.

Bird is the second American women’s basketball player to raise the flag, joining Dawn Staley, the current coach who raised the flag at the 2004 Athens Olympics. They were Bird’s first participation.

“It is a great honor to be selected as the flag bearer of Team USA,” Bird said. “I experienced it when Dawn Staley was chosen in 2004, so I know what that means. Than the moment when it was chosen to represent the whole by fellow athletes in Team USA. It’s a great honor. The delegation, and it will last forever. ”

Bird is about to win an unprecedented fifth gold medal with his teammate Diana Torashi. This will give you the most gold medals in women’s basketball history.

Alvarez will be the first baseball player to raise the US flag. The sport returned to the Games at the request of Japan after absent from the last two Olympics.

He made his major league debut in the Miami Marlins last year, but this year he is a minor. If the US baseball team wins a medal, he is the third American to win medals in both winter and summer games, to Eddie Eagan (boxing and bobsleigh) and Lauryn Williams (athletics and bobsleigh). I will join.
