Arizona’s graduate defensive back, Chase Lucas, is the captain of this season’s Sun Devil’s football team. His efforts as a leader and competitor helped Arizona take third place on the Pac-12 with an overall 8-4 record and a 6-3 league record.

“I wouldn’t have changed my experience in the world,” Lucas said. “I have a great teammate. I have a great quarterback.”

During the 2021 season, Lucas won 30 solo tackles and 6 pass reflections. He made the best 7 tackles of the season against Arizona Wildcats. Lucas has been with Sun Devil’s for six seasons. He could have declared an NFL draft last year, but he believed that Arizona could run powerfully. During the off-season, he and his teammates formed a close bond.

“We don’t see anyone as cancer for the team,” Lucas said. “They play an important role in our success.”

Arizona quarterback Jayden Daniels praised Lucas’ vocals, energetic, and genuine leadership style.

“As a leader, if he rides on you and yells at you and yells at you, I want to fight you, but after all, it’s all love,” Daniels said. “He wants to see everyone do great things, and that’s exactly the real guy he is.”

During the blockade of COVID-19 in 2020, Lucas was able to reflect and strengthen his love for football. “If you downplay football, football will look down on you,” he said.

“I felt like I was looking down on football [the quarantine]”Lucas said. “I wasn’t training the way I was supposed to be training, I wasn’t focusing on what I was supposed to focus on.”

The months of the blockade helped me ponder what he really wanted.

Lucas recently received a bachelor’s degree in communication. His favorite class at Arizona State University was the movie class.

“I had to watch a lot of movies before writing a dissertation,” Lucas said. “I didn’t like writing a dissertation, I liked watching the movie part.”

Lucas wanted to avoid signing deals when it came to policies regarding new names, images and portraits of college athletes.

“I feel like everything is coming, so I’m not very focused at this point,” he said. “I’m all about it, but it had to fit properly.”

During his career at Arizona State University, Lucas made 223 tackles, two sack, and 28 pass breakups.

“I didn’t play [defensive back] Until I enter college, “Lukas said. “In the corner position, it’s all about self-confidence.”
