Student allegedly brings loaded firearm to Monterey Trail High | News

A student has been arrested for allegedly carrying a loaded firearm at the Monterey Trail High School campus in Elk Grove on April 20. Campus security located the suspect and reportedly confiscated the weapon.

Elk Grove Unified School District spokesman Xanthi Soriano told the Citizen that the student did not use a firearm on campus. School officials were notified after someone saw that the student owned the gun, he said.

Sacramento County Sheriff’s spokesman Rodney Grassmann told Citizen that the suspect took the gun in his backpack to school and told a classmate. The student then alerted a parent who went on to alert the authorities. Grassmann was unaware of the suspect’s age, until the time of publication.

In her April 20 letter to parents, Monterey Trail principal Lara Ricks did not specify what disciplinary action was taken against the student, except that she “subsequently followed appropriate action.”

The principal asked parents to remind their children that weapons of any kind are prohibited on their campus and that offenders can be expelled or arrested. He also thanked those who alerted school staff about the gun on April 20th.

“The safety of our students and staff is a priority at Monterey Trail High School, and we tell our students, staff, parents and the community,‘ If you see something or know something, say something, ’” Ricks wrote.
