Dwayne Haskins was working on a second chapter of his young career in the NFL. The 24-year-old quarterback spent time with some Pittsburgh Steelers team-mates preparing to compete for a starting job.

Then his life was cut short.

Haskins was killed early Saturday morning when he was hit by a dump truck while driving on a highway in South Florida. A spokeswoman for the Florida Highway Patrol, Lt. Indiana Miranda, said Haskins had been pronounced dead at the scene.

“He was trying to cross the western lanes of Interstate 595 when there was oncoming traffic,” Miranda said in an email statement.

Miranda did not say why Haskins was on the highway at the time. The incident caused the highway to be shut down for several hours, and Miranda said it was an “open investigation into a trafficking homicide”.

Choosing for the 2019 first-round draft from Washington, Haskins was released from the team after 3-10 for two seasons. He was signed by Pittsburgh as QB for development, but did not appear in a match last season.

“I’m devastated and have no words because of Dwayne Haskins’ unfortunate drop-out,” said Steelers coach Mike Tomlin. “He quickly became part of our Steelers family after arriving in Pittsburgh and was one of our most diligent workers, both in the field and in our community. Duane was a great teammate, but even more a great friend to so many people. I really have a broken heart.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Calabria and his whole family during this difficult time.

Washington coach Ron Rivera said he was “completely overwhelmed” when he learned of Haskins’ death.

“Dwayne was a talented young man who had a long life ahead of him,” Rivera said in a statement. “It’s a very sad moment and I honestly have no words. I know that I am speaking on behalf of the rest of our team, saying that he will be very much missed. At this time, our entire team sends our heartfelt condolences, thoughts and prayers to the Haskins family.

The state of Ohio published a photo of Haskins in his Twitter show, topped with the description “Leader. Legend. Forever Buckeye. ”

In the state of Ohio, Haskins set records for one season for passing 50-yard touchdowns and 4,831-yard passes. He was the MVP of the Rose Bowl for 2019, while the Buckeyes scored 13-1.

Ohio coach Ryan Day, who coached the quarterbacks during Haskins ‘last season at school, called Haskins’ death beyond tragic.

The Steelers gave Haskins a chance to resurrect his career in January 2021, when they signed him a month after he was released from Washington. Humbled by the decision, Haskins stressed that he is eager to work hard and take on as much as possible from Ben Rothlisberger and Mason Rudolph.

Haskins entered the roster as a third player, but dressed only once, serving as a backup in the draw with Detroit after Rotlisberger was included in the COVID-19 protocol the night before the match.

Tomlin and general manager Kevin Colbert praised Haskins for his improvement since joining the team, and the Steelers re-signed him with a one-year contract as a limited free agent in March. He was expected to compete with Rudolph and Trubyski at training camp.
