Donald Trump’s subpoena will be issued ‘soon’

Annie Grayer | CNN

Republican Rep. Liz Cheney said the House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol Summon Not just documents, but “soon” to former President Donald Trump to seek his testimony under oath.

Speaking at the Harvard Political Institute on Tuesday, the committee’s vice chair did not promise what the panel would do if Trump did not comply with the subpoena, but said it would “take necessary steps.” .

“There was no disagreement with the committee,” said the Wyoming Republican, explaining how the committee came to the decision to submit the subpoena to Trump.

“Our duty is to seek his testimony, that the American people deserve to hear directly from him, that it must be sworn in, and that he must be held accountable. We will soon be issuing a subpoena for both his testimony and documents at But if that doesn’t happen, I’ll take the necessary steps after that, but I don’t want to go too far down that road at the moment.”

Committee members voted unanimously last week to submit a subpoena to Trump Panel final hearings before midterm elections, but no formal summons has been issued. The vote marked a significant escalation by the panel setting up a showdown with the former president.

While Trump is not expected to comply with the subpoena, the action serves as a way for the commission to set a marker and show that it seeks information directly from Trump when investigating the attack.

The subpoena will trigger a lengthy legal battle over Trump’s possible compliance that could even outlast the Commission itself. Republicans have pledged to close the panel if the House wins a majority in next month’s midterm elections.
