SoCal doctor wears full respirator hood for COVID safety on JetBlue flight

Los Angeles (KABC)-On his first flight trip since the pandemic, a Southern California doctor wore a full breathing hood around his head-giving him an interesting look from fellow passengers and finally I ordered a mask from the airline to exchange it for a simple one.

Dr. Anthony Cardillo, CEO of Mend Urgent Care, said the device he wore was the same one he used to treat patients with COVID-19 in the emergency room.

It is called PAPR, or powered air purification respirator. It includes an enclosed hood around the head attached to a battery-powered HEPA filter worn around the waist.

“I think it’s a lot more comfortable than wearing a N95 (mask),” Cardillo said. “It’s certainly very safe and effective. This is what I wear in the emergency department.”

Cardillo, who was vaccinated in January, said he simply felt safer to wear an additional level of protection, while some of the other leaflets gave him an interesting look. say.

Then, about two hours after the flight to Florida, a JetBlue employee asked him to remove it. They said it did not comply with airline mask standards.

He switched to a regular N95 mask.

He hopes to contact JetBlue at some point to find out why devices made for doctors in the emergency room do not exactly meet their criteria.

“I felt very safe,” he says. “At least the first two hours”
