SLO CAL Open kicks off at Pismo Beach

Hosted by the World Surf League, the SLO CAL Open Surf Competition kicked off on Monday at Pismo Beach Pier.

This is the fifth year the contest has been held at Pismo Beach, and the stakes are higher than ever.

This event has been increased from QS 1,000 to QS 3,000. This means more prize money, more points, and a tougher set of contestants.

Surfing for Hope is hosting the event.

Over 11 years, the nonprofit has raised over $500,000 and distributed it to various cancer research centers.

Local surfer Austin Newman from Pismo Beach is looking forward to playing on home ground this week.

Having recovered from an ankle injury he suffered a few years ago, Neumann feels healthy and excited to compete.

“Having a contest at Pismo is really cool. Even just being able to sleep in your own bed, know where to park, and be able to surf the waves you surf every day helps,” says Neumann. I was.

The event will run through January 29th and will feature 90 men and 50 women from across North America.

More surfers will face off at the SLO CAL Open February 23-26, 2023 in Morro Bay.
