Skunk, bat test positive for rabies in Monterey County

A skunk found near East Romie Lane in Salinas tested positive for rabies, Monterey County Health officials said.

It is the second wildlife case to test positive for the virus in less than a week. On April 22, a Mexican free-tailed bat was also rabid in the Chualar Canyon area, according to county health officials.

Monterey County Animal Services has investigated both cases. They believe that although there was exposure to domestic animals, there was no human exposure in any of the cases.

“The Monterey County Department of Health and Animal Services want to remind the public that there is a continuing presence of rabies in local wildlife, both inside and outside the city limits,” said health officials.

Skunks and bats are the most common species that test positive for the virus locally.
