Should California adopt a stricter recall election law? Bay Area Rep. Mark DeSaulnier weighs in

San Francisco (KGO)-As Governor of California Gavin Newsom Faced with more and more recall efforts, laws permitting such elections are being scrutinized.

Democratic Congressman Mark DeSaulnier believes it’s time to completely rethink the law, or at least tighten the requirements to carry out the recall.

Relation: Why do people want to remember Governor Gavin Newsom?I will explain

According to supporters, “I think recalls can be used for purposes other than the desired effect, if you have the money,” De Sasurnier told ABC7 news anchor Liz Kreutz and contributor Phil Matier. .. Sunday morning interview. “So I think it’s wise for the state to at least revisit it because of the threshold.”

Only one of the Governor of California (former Governor Gray Davis) has been recalled in the state. He was dismissed. Still, California has some of the most generous recall methods in any state.

Joshua Spivak, author of The Recall Elections Blog, explained that government officials could be recalled in the state for almost any reason. “I don’t like the recall of your face what I think of it,” he recently told ABC7 News.

The number of signatures required to perform a recall is equivalent to 12% of the final turnout. Currently, there are about 1.5 million signatures. Spivak said social media and technology have made it even easier to meet thresholds.

“Social media can make people interesting and angry. You can get people registered,” he said. “And with every change, it’s much easier to raise money.”

Relation: Recall that the Newsom organizer has set an important milestone for participating in the vote.

In an interview with ABC7 News, Congressman DeSornia questioned why it was much easier to make a recall in California than to impeach the president.

“I think it’s an interesting juxtaposition, and I think it’s difficult to recall in California and its ease of use, impeachment, and even dismiss the US president, or even warn him,” he said.

Still, DeSornia said he didn’t expect the Republicans to successfully dismiss Newsom. “They need an Arnold Schwarzenegger figure, but I don’t think they can,” he explained.

Relation: Former Governor candidate John Cox will run for Governor of California if Newsom is recalled

He also believes that by the time the recall takes place, people will have a very different view of dealing with Newsom’s pandemic.

“I believe we should manufacture and deliver vaccines to reduce pandemics in the coming weeks and months,” he said. “The environment when people actually vote for recalls is different than it is today.”
