After the June 22 vote, hosts operating short-term rentals without permission or hosts whose guests violate code requirements will be fined. Supervisors also voted in June to strengthen the staffing of law enforcement officers whose mission is to maintain compliance for short-term rental properties.
Fines for violating short-term rental rules are now 10 times higher. Within 12 months, you will be fined $ 1,000, $ 2,000, and $ 5,000 instead of $ 100 for the first breach, $ 200 for the second breach, and $ 500 for the third breach.
These rules, designed to prevent renting from confusing the neighborhood, are explained when someone applies for a permit, but until now many haven’t signed up for a permit. This is part of what the county is currently fixing, said supervisor Dawn Rowe.
“If you were a short-term lessor who received a permit and went through the process, you spent money to create a safe environment,” Rowe said. “We will learn a lot about what is allowed and what is not allowed, and what creates a safe environment. “I think there is no doubt that short-term rentals that don’t respect neighbors are a problem for the community,” Brada said. “It gives our people a black eye when other managers have problems, as there are plenty of staff and steps to help guests understand the rules.”
Homestead Modern, which specializes in luxury vacation rentals, has people who can remind guests of the rules and handle complaints 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. According to Brada, this is part of the county’s requirements, but he apparently has few people following it.

“We need to be very clear about the number of short-term rentals, the number of things we have applied for and have not yet received,” he said. “Park rangers, teachers, athletes, and even families are aware that no housing is available.”
