The closed Chinese capital, Shanghai, will reopen four of the 20 subway lines on Sunday as it slowly eases sanctions on residents who have been living in their homes for more than six weeks.

The city will also reopen 273 bus lanes connecting major cities, airports, train stations As well as hospitals as public transport continues to flow to the districts, Yu Fulin, director of the Shanghai Transport Administration, said at a regular press conference on Thursday.

It is not directly stated how long the service will last. Bus services are back on trial in three districts this week, with buses running every 30 to 90 minutes during the day.

The closure of China’s largest city has put a strain on the country’s economy and frustrated the region’s residents, especially as many countries around the world are abandoning such drastic measures as they struggle to survive the virus. But officials have insisted on zero-COVID, saying the restrictions could jeopardize public health and lead to more deaths, especially in the elderly who do not have adequate immunizations. .

The outbreak in Shanghai has killed 580 people, according to official figures, making it the deadliest since the outbreak in Wuhan in early 2020.
