Steps to prevent, or at least mitigate, package theft

According to SafeWise, a third of Americans surveyed had their packages stolen despite having security or doorbell cameras installed in their homes.

Essentially, more people are taking extra steps to protect their orders, but thieves are also getting bolder.

Steps homeowners can take include:

  • Delivery alert: Most companies offer real-time tracking of packages, so you can meet the delivery person at home when they deliver your order
  • Signature Required: If this is an option, it will help avoid packages being left on your doorstep
  • Lighting and camera installation: The brighter the area, the less likely a thief will try to steal your package.
  • Daytime delivery: If you can choose delivery, choose delivery during the day when someone is likely to be home or there is likely to be more movement in the neighborhood
  • Locker or store pickup: Pick up the item at the store or locker if the company offers it.These are typically located within existing businesses or in surveillance areas
