According to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, seven people were killed in a shooting that spanned two separate scenes Monday afternoon at Half Moon Bay.

Four victims with gunshot wounds were found dead in a nursery along Block 12700 of San Mateo Road (Hwy 92) around 2:22 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office. Another shooting victim was taken to Stanford Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Shortly after that discovery, three more gunshot victims were found dead in another nursery along the 2100 block of Cabrillo Highway South, according to the sheriff’s office.

Authorities identified the suspect as 67-year-old Chunli Zhao, who lives in Half Moon Bay. According to the Sheriff’s Office, he was found in his car in the parking lot of the Sheriff’s Office in his Bay substation around 4:40 p.m. Half Moon and was taken into custody without incident. A semi-automatic pistol was found in his car.

Officials said Zhao shot three of the victims in a trailer where they lived next to the field they were working in, then shot two others in the field itself.

“They were farm workers affected tonight. There were also children at the scene of the incident. This is a truly heartbreaking incident for our community,” said supervisor Ray Mueller.

Authorities believe Cho acted alone, said San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus.

Corpus said the victims are believed to be workers at the facility. Half Moon Bay City Councilor Debbie Ruddock said the victim was a Chinese farm worker.

“This is a devastating tragedy for this community and families touched by this unspeakable act of violence,” Corpus said.

“This kind of shooting is terrifying,” Corpus said. “This is a tragedy we hear all too often, but it hit us here in San Mateo County today.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom said he was meeting with the victims of the Monterey Park shooting when he learned about the Half Moon Bay shooting.

“Tragedy after tragedy,” he tweeted.
