On March 17, the family of 22-year-old Eduardo Amaya was preparing for a quinceañera when they opened fire on them.

He shot his father, Marco Amaya Diaz, his 27-year-old sister and his mom.

Marco Diaz who was dead when the deputies arrived.

“Having someone in the family to step aside is inexplicable; it’s just a complete tragedy,” Tony Boti said in the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.

Amaya pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder after refusing to leave his cell twice.

The family tells Action News that he has some mental health problems, which are expected to be the focus of his defense.

One of these counts of attempted murder will likely be upgraded to a second count of murder.
