Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg stops at the Crenshaw destination
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg visited South Los Angeles on July 8, visiting the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and the City of Compton. He also participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly opened “K” line, the new Crenshaw-to-LAX subway line.
His final stop on his visit was “Destination Crenshaw,” a multi-million dollar vision co-created by the late rapper and entrepreneur Nipsey Hussle.
While touring Destination Crenshaw and the historic boulevard with Mayor Eric Garcetti, Congresswoman Karen Bass, restaurateur Greg Doolan and Councilwoman Marquis Harris-Dawson, Buttigieg praised the work of local officials and the vision to beautify the historic Black Quarter. Buttigieg spoke with Destination President Crenshaw and the development team.
Harris-Dawson stated: “Nipsey Hustle gave the name to the project. He talks about how the train is important and that it can capture the eyes, ears, hearts and pockets of those who pass by. He was the one who said at a meeting: “This train was built so that Crenshaw could go through it. We have to make Crenshaw the destination.”
The councilor continued, “Later that day, Nipsey tweeted ‘Destination Crenshaw,’ and today we have a $120 million outdoor museum of the people that will be located along Crenshaw Blvd.”
Buttigieg, under the leadership of the Biden administration, is responsible for spending the $1 trillion Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which took effect in November 2021, which Destination Crenshaw will benefit from.
While visiting the mural at 50th and Crenshaw, the secretary said, “One of the nicest things in the last few days has been meeting women of color, including black women, who have never seen anyone who looks like them on these construction sites that had the opportunity to get these well-paying jobs, often union jobs. So we’re very excited about the opportunity there.”
Since its inception, HireLAX has trained over 250 apprentices—many of them women and people of color who have historically struggled to find well-paying jobs—and prepares them not just for jobs, but for careers that will pay well, often with trade union positions in construction, carpentry, plumbing, etc.
During the tour, Congressman Bass highlighted the influence and contributions of black lawmakers, saying, “The Congressional Black Caucus is leading the effort to ensure that jobs, small businesses and opportunities are available to African Americans. “
While in town, Minister Buttigieg also visited Los Angeles International Airport. He was joined by Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Airport Commission President Beatrice Hsu and others, where he discussed upcoming improvements at LAX and Long Beach Airport.
Both airports are expected to receive multimillion-dollar grants from the bipartisan infrastructure law, which includes a $1 billion national program to fund 85 airports nationwide, of which LAX will receive $50 million and Long Beach Airport will receive $10. 6 million dollars. The grants will help pay for ongoing and new infrastructure projects at both airports over the next five years.
