2021 Staff Bus School The San Diego County Department of Education and the San Diego County Credit Union will work together for the seventh consecutive year to officially launch a supplies drive on Thursday to help students in the region experiencing homelessness.
County data have identified more than 20,000 school-age children in San Diego County as homeless, and this population is particularly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. SDCOE and SDCCU, along with iHeartMedia, Ralphs and Food 4 Less grocery stores, will cost thousands of dollars online and in stores to buy pencils, pens, binders, crayons, backpacks and more needed during the campaign. Aims to collect donations. Part of the donation will also help San Diego Youth Services provide food to homeless youth through a variety of food programs.
“Especially this year, our students will need not only specific items such as supplies, but also relationship support to return to school and address the social and emotional challenges of the pandemic.” Stated. Susie Terry, coordinator of SDCOE’s Foster Youth and Homeless Education Services. “Collecting supplies through the Stuff the Bus campaign is just one way to help districts, students and families during this time, so we’re one less worried as the new semester approaches.”
This year’s Stuff the Bus campaign collects donations online or in stores at Ralphs or Food 4 Less grocery stores in the county. Donations are welcome in any amount and cover the cost of backpacks and supplies for junior high school students for $ 25.
The campaign, which runs throughout July, has also partnered with local iHeartMedia radio stations Star 94.1, JAM’N 95.7, and Channel 93.3 for special appearances and live interviews.
In 2020, the Stuff the Bus campaign raised more than $ 130,000 to support the purchase of more than 7,700 backpacks filled with supplies for students in San Diego County.
Paul Gosold, school director of San Diego County, said: “As we get out of this pandemic, our students and families continue to face many challenges. Even a small donation can have a significant impact on some of the most vulnerable students.”
