SD City College alumna to soar into space Saturday aboard Blue Origin rocket

Katya Echazarreta, a graduate of San Diego City College, is about to get stuck on a rocket on Saturday and become the first Mexican-born woman to travel into space.

Blue Origin, the space rocket and travel company created by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, says the New Shepard rocket will be launched from Texas on a submarine mission that will take about 11 minutes.

The Lift-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. Pacific time and will be broadcast live on blueorigin.com.

The rocket will travel three times faster than the speed of sound and will soar to a height of 62 miles, reaching the point where space begins.

Echazarreta, a 26-year-old engineer, will be accompanied by astronaut Evan Dick, Action Aviation President Hamish Harding, production policy engineer Victor Correa Hespanha and Dream Variation Ventures co-founder Jaison Robinson.

When Echazarreta learned last month that she was going to make the trip, she put her hands on her face, laughed, cried and then said to an interviewer: “My mom will be terrified…”

She later told a second interviewer that her mom “is so excited that she tried to go and make T-shirts, she tries to find matching rings for her, my sister and me, that I can go to space and carve.” . At the moment it is just above the moon “.

Echazarreta was born in Guadalajara, Mexico and later moved to San Diego, where she attended San Diego City College. He went on to earn a degree in electrical engineering and is currently working on a postgraduate degree in engineering at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

It will be the last in a long list of people with connections in San Diego who will travel in space. Just in recent years, three UC San Diego alumni – Megan McArthur, Kate Rubins and Jessica Meir – have served on the International Space Station as NASA astronauts.

Meir is scheduled to give the UCSD start address on June 11.
