SACRAMENTO – California State Sen. Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, announced that more than $3 million in funding from the Transitional Housing Program will benefit Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. The Transitional Housing Program, a program of the California Department of Housing and Community Development, aims to help 18- to 24-year-olds find and maintain housing, with preference given to those who have previously been in the foster care and probation systems.

“Unfortunately, homelessness is an issue that we simply cannot ignore. While there are many actions our state needs to take to finally end the homelessness crisis, better resources for vulnerable youth is a step in the right direction. By helping young people in our community stay housed, we are making a serious and lasting dent in the cycle of homelessness,” Wilk said.

Earlier this year, Senate Republicans introduced a robust package of actionable legislation to combat homelessness, calling for accountability, compassion and care while emphasizing the need to improve state prevention programs.

Former foster youth and those who have recently left the criminal justice system may be at greater risk of homelessness. Senate Republicans argue that these vulnerable members of our communities must be better served if we are to break the cycle of homelessness. New Transitional Housing Program funds can further this goal by supporting at-risk youth throughout California.
