State Public Education Inspector Tony Thurmond hosted a group of state literacy experts on Wednesday to discuss literacy strategies. Special hearings were held to gather information on a number of literacy strategies proposed by law in the state budget.
“We want to work on both the legislation and the state budget priorities, including literacy professionals and coaches who we believe can really help meet the challenges that many students face during the epidemic,” said State Inspector Thurmond. . “I know that third grade reading has avoided the education system for many years, but this is what we can achieve. Without it, students are more likely to drop out of school, they are at greater risk in the criminal justice system. “This is something we can and should do.”
Thurmond sponsors Senate Bill 952 to help existing schools transform into bilingual immersion programs. Bill 2498 of the Convention to expand Freedom School curriculum, evidence-based Afrocentric literacy programs that have been shown to help students improve their reading in six to one grade levels over six weeks. 24 AB 2465, which will expand literacy programs to fund home visits to help families achieve literacy goals. Last September, Thurmond took the initiative to ensure that students learn to read by the third grade by 2026. To advance this goal, Thurmond promised to donate one million books to needy students. In partnership with Renaissance Learning, Inc., students downloaded more than five million free online books as part of their literacy effort.
Thurmond also pledged support for the proposed state budget, providing resources for legislation, and working with community libraries to increase membership and access to student libraries as part of a state literacy promotion strategy.
