SCVNews.com | SCE Begins Work to Reduce High Wind Power Outages in Canyon Country

Southern California Edison has begun electrical grid work on the Marcus Circuit in Canyon Country to strengthen and increase system resiliency during high fire weather conditions.

The work will replace 2.3 miles of existing overhead wires with covered conductor, which is expected to result in a 100% reduction in customer outages, assuming similar weather conditions to 2020 and 2021.

All customers in this area have been mailed information directly from SCE.

SCE continues to implement its wildfire mitigation program to tighten the network in areas of high fire risk. The goal is to make communities more resilient to wildfires over time and reduce the need for power outages.

In 2021, SCE made significant progress accelerating grid hardening efforts to reduce the need for public safety power outages on circuits that experienced four or more outages between 2019 and January 2021.

With work completed last year, the company estimates that customers on the most frequently affected circuits experienced a reduction of more than 70% in total outage time based on weather and fuel conditions in 2021.

To reduce these outages, SCE will tighten more than 50 circuits this year. Additionally, in response to last November’s extreme weather, which saw wind gusts in excess of 80 mph in some locations, SCE will make further improvements to 11 of the circuits hardened last year.

Residents will see road closures, lane reductions and sidewalk closures as part of the work. In addition, SCE will notify customers at least 72 hours in advance of any temporary power outages required for this project.
