More evacuations for Smith River, Happy Camp fires

Updated Aug. 26

New evacuation orders have been issued because of wildfires burning since last week in California’s northwest corner.

An area of southern Oregon came under evacuation order Thursday, Aug. 24, after the Smith River Complex — California’s second largest wildfire of the season — crossed the state line from Del Norte County.

In neighboring Sisikyou County, the evacuation zone for the Elliott Fire was expanded. Elliott, on the western side of the Happy Camp Complex, now encompasses the former Canyon and Three Camps fires.

With decreased activity on Happy Camp’s eastern side, some evacuation orders there were downgraded to a warning, including for the community of Seiad Valley. Highway 96 reopened, though with traffic delays.

The map above shows the mandatory evacuation orders in red and the approximate perimeters of the largest fires in black. Colored dots show the locations of some of the smaller fires.

In Trinity County, an evacuation order remains in place for the Deep Fire. Humboldt County has warnings but no mandatory evacuations. Find more on those fires here.
