SCVNews.com | L.A. County Unemployment Rate Falls to 5.5%, 13,000 Jobs Added

The Los Angeles County unemployment rate fell to 5.5 percent in April from 5.7 percent in March, and county employers added 13,000 jobs to their payroll, according to state figures released recently.

The 5.5% unemployment rate in April was the lowest since the first outbreak of the epidemic in March 2020, improving from 10.4% in April last year. The rate has fallen by more than two-thirds since the epidemic hit 19.2% in May 2020.

However, the Los Angeles County unemployment rate continued to lag behind the state, which stood at 4.8% in April. The Los Angeles County’s unemployment rate was also higher than the national unemployment rate of 3.6%.

The California Department of State’s Employment Development has released the district’s unemployment rate distribution. These rates differ from the regional average because they are not adjusted for seasonal factors such as vacation pay. The two largest cities, Los Angeles and Long Beach, recorded seasonally unadjusted interest rates of 4.9% and 4.8%, respectively.

Among cities with at least 10,000 employees, Lancaster had the highest unemployment rate at 7.3% and Lomita had the lowest at 2.2%.

At the same time, Los Angeles County employers posted just 13,300 more jobs on their payrolls in April than in March, which coincides with a similar increase in February-March.

The Los Angeles County acquired nearly 660,000, or 84%, of the 785,000 wage jobs lost during the first outbreak in the spring of 2020. The county does not yet have about 125,000 jobs until the peak of the epidemic, which reached 4.622 million in February. .
