SCVNews.com | COC’s New Welding Program Receives National Science Foundation Grant

Canyons College received a $ 646,354 grant from the National Science Foundation’s Advanced Technological Education to fund the Welding Education Smart Technology project.

Launched in the fall of 2022, the WEST project will integrate smart technology platforms, combined with industry-recognized stackable certifications, into the current curriculum և training to improve welding technology education.

“We are very excited to receive this grant from the National Science Foundation, which will take our welding program to the next level,” said Harriet Heppel, Dean of the College’s Career and Technical Education.

The grant will help equip the college’s welding technology laboratory with state-of-the-art “smart” welding systems for more hands-on training time, instant welding evaluation, high-quality training for technicians, and improved safety.

“The WEST project will help create a pipeline of skilled welders ready to meet the requirements of Industry 5.0,” said Tim Baber, Head of College Welding Technology. “We will be able to tailor the curriculum to the same smart technology students they encounter in today’s workforce.”

At COC, the WEST program will also build on existing partnerships to develop basic welding skills at the secondary school level, increase student engagement, graduation, and achieve industry-related credentials.

WEST is expected to serve a grant period of 300 students entering traditional or dual enrollment channels.

“This grant from the National Science Foundation will enable us to enhance equitable access to certification channels through flexible instruction,” Baber said. “This is an exciting time for our welding project.”
