The California Institute of the Arts held its graduation ceremony Friday, May 13, at the CalArts Graduation Courtyard. After two years of virtual ceremonies, the 2022 CalArts class celebrated their graduation with a solo event at the University of Valencia.

The graduation ceremony began at 4 pm with performances by the CalArts Balinese Gamelan Ensemble և Balinese Dance, led by Neumann Venten և Nanik Venten, Faculty of Music. When the alumni and guests arrived at the event, they found that the lawn of the graduation yard was strewn with chairs, banquet blankets, and live music echoing in the galleries of the main building.

At the CalArts General Gallery, President Ravi Rajan hosted a reception for the graduates և their families և friends. The music was provided by the Student Jazz Orchestra.

As family and friends took their seats in the Graduation Yard, they had a solemn concert with the energetic DJ Ascia Vargas Toure (Music MFA 2023), who performs as Biiirth.

The ceremony began with a graduation march led by the African Music Dance Ensemble, led by Andrew Grueshov of the Faculty of Music. The graduates, wearing everything from special costumes to suits to casual wear, walked around the yard before taking their seats.

Tataviam Elder Dennis Garcia of Fernando Tataviam / Chumash made a call to the indigenous peoples of the Santa Clarita Valley to recognize the land.

“You will embark on a new journey after this part of your education, beginning to hone your skills in the various media outlets of your choice,” Garcia said. “Each of you is an artist. Be it with a brush stroke, a dance step, a spoken word, a song or a photo, you are all storytellers. ”

Provost Tracy Costantino welcomed the students’ resilience over the past few years.

“Seeing the work you have created, despite the global epidemic, the violence, the war, the dangers to our civil rights, our physical autonomy, the psychological, emotional, physical barriers,” said Constantino. “But you have been patient. You have helped each other, shown us all the power of art to transform, to inspire action. ”

Costantino also introduced the CalArts 2022 honorary title, including jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter, multi-instrumentalist Charles Lloyd, jazz bassist and singer Esperanza Spalding.

The pre-recorded video of each of the winners is interrupted by Tim Disney’s former President և Newly Appointed Trustee, Student Union President Isha Khanzode (Art BFA 2022), Student Trustee Jordin Ross (BFA 2022 Theater) նախագահ Charmaine New Joffers Board of Trustees.

Rajan repeated the thoughts of the previous speakers, noting the challenges faced by the graduates, most of whom had to undergo virtual training during the epidemic.

“You all received your admission without knowing that March 2020 marked the beginning of the 12 most disturbing months in CalArts history. “But each of you who are graduating today has decided to continue in all this chaos,” Rajan said. “Through every unimaginable challenge that could get you off track, you said: “I continue. “Instead, I am stubborn.” So your college experience may not have been what you envisioned when you started. In fact, it could have been the opposite, but it did not stop you from creating art, raising your voice, changing the world through the work you create. ”

The presentation for the 366 alumni began at The Herb Alpert School of Music, followed by Sharon Disney Lund Dance School, Film / Video School, Critical School, Art School, and Theater School.

According to CalArts tradition, the graduates chose short pieces of music or sound to use as they walked across the stage. Those who did not submit their own audio left the default song – Toto’s 1982 hit “Africa”.

When all the diplomas were awarded, Harry Le Grande, Interim Vice President for Student Experience, closed the ceremony.

The evening ended with a festive reception at the Main Gallery with the participation of graduates and guests. They enjoyed the performances of the African Music և Dance Ensemble և CalArts Salsa Band, led by David Roystein of the Faculty of Music.
