Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanu held a press conference on Tuesday to announce a new initiative to protect public safety while riding the subway.

According to sheriff officials, there have been several crimes in the metro system over the past six months, including people being pushed onto train tracks and attacks on passengers by homeless people.

Sexual harassment of female passengers and deliberate arson while driving a train were reported. Some of these crimes have resulted in death.

According to Metro, about 5,700 homeless people live in the train system and on the subway platforms. This has created a huge problem for those whose only transportation option is the train system.

“The biggest problem we have at the moment with the whole transit system is that we have a homeless population living in the train system and on the platforms. “And at its crossroads, the people who actually use trains for their intended purpose, for travel, collide, it has deadly consequences,” said Sheriff Vilanu.

To stop the serious problem և To ensure the safety of subway passengers, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office launches Operation Safe Travel. This will be a multi-layered approach to targeted operations along the train system. The aim of the operation will be the safety of the passengers, having high visibility of the law enforcement bodies, removal of the homeless from the trains, platforms, assistance of the homeless, and early intervention. Right now the security guards are asking for help from the deputies, when the situation gets out of their control, sometimes that intervention is delayed. In case of early intervention, the deputies can communicate with the person concerned, so as not to aggravate the situation.

Resources for the operation will include members of various LASD unit bureaus, including the Sheriff Response Team, the Community Oriented Police Service, the Vaccine Assistance Team, the Transport Bureau Special Assignment Team, assembled parts, the Bureau of Drug Safety, the details և other subdivisions և bureaus from the Sheriff’s department.

Operation Safe Travel will begin on June 1, 2022. The first step in a multi-layered approach will be the removal of individuals living in transit. LASD wants train passengers to see the difference and feel safe using the subway. Train passengers and cyclists are encouraged to call this number to report any concerns about the Metro’s emergencies. (213) 229-2298:.
