Mayor Lauren West attended an event in South Gate, where the Los Angeles County Open Space Park awarded Santa Clarita $ 1 million in “Measure Only Acquisition” funding to support the future acquisition of Borax Mine Open Space. Property in Santa Clarita Valley.

The city of Santa Clarita was one of 30 recipients of grants selected by the RPOSD, which provided the city with the full amount of funding required.

“Our city of Santa Clarita has long been committed to preserving the vast open space that surrounds our community,” said Mayor Laurent West. “Thanks to this grant, we will be able to add this vital 400 acres to the thousands of acres that have already been preserved. “These natural areas not only provide recreation opportunities for residents, but also protect the wildlife potential.”

For the past five years, the city has partnered with The Trust for Public Land on a project to acquire ownership of the Borax Mine Open Space, which is part of the Angeles National Forest Concept Area Conservation Plan. The grants will be used to close the existing funding gap for the acquisition of ownership. This potential land is key to reconnecting the Forest of Angeles to complete the green belt surrounding the city of Santa Clarita.

In the fall of 2021, Santa Clarita City Council authorized staff to apply for the A Measure grant, and staff applied for the Acquisition Only grant to further fund the Borax open pit. This land will become part of the thousands of acres of open space in the Santa Clarita Valley, which is protected from future development.
