Santa Ana Unified School District under fire after paychecks delayed for hundreds of employees

Santa Ana, CA (KABC)-The Santa Ana Unified School District is working to keep up with the unpaid salaries of hundreds of employees.

Calls about salary shortages flooded the Santa Ana Educators’ Association (SAEA) office from the end of August. The other line-Hundreds of teachers and other employees in the Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD).

Barbara Pearson is President of SAEA and represents many of the certified staff affected and has filed complaints on their behalf.

“It’s unthinkable not to pay the people who work and serve for most of the month,” Pearson said.

According to Pearson, the issue primarily affected new employees working there before August 9.

“These are young teachers and are trying to secure their first apartment or first home. They need a down payment last month. They need to pay their first mortgage. They need to show their income. They need to fund their loan. I can procure it. “

A district spokesperson told Eyewitness News that there is a backlog in employee processing due to the recent surge in new hires-more than 350 are in the middle of the summer.

“They knew this was coming, and basically they weren’t ready to process the paperwork as fast as it needed to be,” Pearson said.

In addition, Pearson said there was a mistake.

“If someone’s data package is missing a small piece because of a 38-page error in the data entry, the system kicks them out and doesn’t pay,” Pearson said.

SAUSD did not confirm that the data entry error on Tuesday played a role and issued the following statement:

The Santa Anna Unified School District is working to address delays in salaries for some staff. The district guarantees that these employees will receive the full amount as soon as the payment is processed.

According to Pearson, since the first week of September, SAEA has urged districts to reduce hard checks on accounts payable.

Pearson said the education law compensation was part of the alleged complaint.
