San Jose restaurateurs push city to pump brakes on car traffic along popular downtown street

San Jose, CA (KGO)-Keeping away after COVID-19 is the goal of a group of restaurant owners along San Pedro Street in downtown San Jose.

Restaurant owners are asking city leaders to consider permanently eliminating the car from the popular stretch between Santa Clara and St. John Street.

ABC7 News first introduced the city of San Jose to viewers April 2020 Al Fresco Concept.. Coordinated efforts have allowed licensed companies to operate in specific outdoor spaces.

Along San Pedro Street, most businesses are expanding their services to the street, and owners want to keep it that way.

“You don’t have to go back to 100%” Sushi secret Owner Randy Musterer told ABC7 News. “We need to go back to 150% for years just to make up for all the losses we had.”

Musterer said he and other restaurant owners have conducted a number of pilot surveys over the past few years, revealing an interest in what he calls an “urban atmosphere.” In this case, it’s a kind of pedestrian paradise.

“We’ve done a lot of pilot research over the last few years, including the Super Bowl and the National Championships,” he explained. “If the pandemic has a silver lining, we recognize that we need to close this street so that everyone in the community here can get off and eat and make these restaurants prosperous.”

“With high-rise housing, all businesses and restaurants, this is exactly what you need for downtown San Jose,” continued Masterler.

However, before making a decision, Colin Heyne of the city’s Ministry of Transport (DOT) says there are many things to consider.

How to maintain access to parking, how closures in this part of San Pedro Street will affect traffic and access in the surrounding area. Give? He emphasized that the idea was still in its infancy.

“It will make a big difference to our downtown street network,” Heyne added. “We need funding for engineering and implementation. At this time, we don’t have the funding specified in the budget.”

Another major issue is maintaining access to the 1,200-space multi-storey car park in the middle of San Pedro Street.

“When we return to pre-COVID levels of traffic and business in that part of downtown, there is considerable demand for that garage and we may have to deal with it,” Heyne said.

Still, he said, in a general sense, the Ministry of Transport has always supported many mixed-use uses of the city’s right of way.

“We’ve been helping local merchants by establishing Parklet for a long time, expanding the streets with outdoor spaces for restaurants and other businesses,” he explained.

However, traffic problems do not divert business owners looking for a more permanent solution.

“There are still many hurdles we have to overcome,” Musterer admitted. “And we hope that cities, communities, city authorities and fire departments can find ways to make this a safe place and minimize the traffic problems it can cause. “

“By closing the street, we have the opportunity to increase revenue and get additional sales to offset all of last year’s losses,” Musterer added.

In addition, he told ABC7 News, “I feel very safe here because the streets are closed and so many people come and go. Although many still work from home. , I’m bringing a dog. I’m here. They’re sitting here on a laptop. And having more people in the community here creates a safer feeling. “

When asked about the possibility of San Pedro Street reflecting the figure, Heine said, “It’s a good example for us to discuss, but as far as I know, it wasn’t officially submitted for review.”

City of San Jose recently voted Extend the Al Fresco program Until the end of the year. Licensed businesses are permitted to continue their business in certain outdoor spaces until at least December 31, 2021.
