People who were previously involved with the San Francisco Tennis Club are now making their final efforts to seek help near 5th and Brannon in the city of San Francisco.
“I personally feel like a double cross. I think the question here is,’Is San Francisco for sale to the highest bidders?'”, Nonprofit. Seth Socolow, head of the San Franciscans for Sports and Recreation organization, said.
According to Sokolow, the Bay Club sold its former tennis facility at 88 Bluxome in 2019 to the Alexandria Real Estate Equity Group, which presented its plans to the city’s planning committee at the time. The new tennis clubs have been listed as their number one “planning principle”. Later, a site with office space, affordable housing, and retail stores was approved.
However, due to the revision of the 2021 plan, the tennis club was abolished. According to a recent document, zoning managers said the exclusion was not important and there was an agreement between nonprofits and owners, but the tennis club in this new location is “not a requirement of the planning code.” Said.
Mike Skinner, executive director of Youth Tennis Advantage, said the move is for 350 people in a poorly serviced community playing tennis in San Francisco and currently playing on the outdoor and indoor courts of a temporary facility near Cow Palace. It states that it will have a negative effect on children.
“The San Francisco Tennis Club has been very generous to us for many years, giving us court time for kids to practice training for free at the clinic. One of our students was Princeton on Wednesday. Was accepted by Skinner, “says Skinner.
Sokolow’s group is appealing to the San Francisco Appeals Commission on Wednesday. He says great men like Serena Williams and Arthur Ashe attended the last tennis court. He wants the board to see the real problem here.
“We are talking about the epicenter of this recreation, which is over 134,000 square feet of indoor recreation space, or about 3 acres,” says Socolow.
I’ve contacted the company of Alexandria Real Estate Equities, but haven’t responded yet.
