San Diego Humane Society caring for 55 birds, cats left in ‘deplorable’ conditions after owner evicted

The San Diego Humane Society is caring for 46 birds and nine cats left behind – in conditions described as “miserable” – when their owner was evicted, the agency said this week.

Humane Society emergency boarding staff is caring for 16 adult quails, 30 quail chicks, one cat and eight kittens, the agency said.

“The animals left behind did not have proper access to food or water and were living in miserable conditions,” the Humane Society said in a statement.

Human rights officials are investigating the incident, the agency said, reminding anyone in a similar situation to seek help.

“Anyone who is shocked by the condition of their pet can contact (the San Diego Humanitarian Society),” the agency said. “We are here to help before a situation gets out of control.”
