The city of San Diego announced Monday that more than $ 840,000 could be returned to nearly 1,070 residents and business owners who have paid for the city’s services or traded with the city in the past three years.

Individual refunds range from $ 1 to $ 77,500. According to the city, the most common types of unclaimed money are refundable checks for overpayment of corporate taxes, overpaid utilities and other charges. Checks that remain unpaid after six months become unclaimed money.

“We want the San Diego to know that one of these checks could be theirs,” said Roma Nichols, acting director of disbursement at the city’s Treasury Department. “We encourage people to check their name or business name on the city’s website sometimes during the year.

“Searching for the report is free, the process to claim a refund is easy and we want to get every dollar back to its rightful owner,” Nichols said.

In 2021, the city returned about $ 600,800 to 75 recipients – only 42% of the money owed. The average claim was $ 8,011.

Beneficiaries have one year after the issuance of the check to claim their money. For checks issued before April 1, 2021, the last day for filing a claim is Monday, June 20. The unclaimed funds will be transferred to the general fund of the city on July 1, 2022. To see the report, visit sandiego.gov/finance/ unclaimed.

There is no charge for requesting a report or filing a claim. To file a claim, print and complete the Unwanted Money Form and mail it to:

San Diego City, Department of the Treasury

Claim processing

202 C St. – Mail Station 7A
