Russian president announces military operation in Ukraine –

KIEV, UKRAINE (KUSI) – Russia has announced the launch of a “special military operation” in Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has promised “consequences for anyone who intervenes.”

In a statement Wednesday night, Putin said the reason for the operation was to protect Ukraine’s Donbass region.

Just days earlier, he had identified Moscow-backed separatists who had claimed ownership of Donbass and Luhansk.

During a special session of the UN on Wednesday night, Russia’s ambassador reiterated Putin’s statements, justifying the operation under Article 51 of the UN Charter, which allows for self-defense.

Putin has said his goal is to “demilitarize and demilitarize” Ukraine.

He also called on Ukrainian soldiers to lay down their arms and return to their homes.

In a translated message of his speech, Putin claimed that he had no intention of occupying Ukraine and that the separatists had asked for his help.
