Russia has been removed as host of the 2023 Men’s Ice Hockey World Championships.
The tournament was to be held in Vladimir Putin’s hometown of St. Petersburg. The International Ice Hockey Federation refers to the “concern for the safety and well-being of all the players, officials, media and fans involved” in the decision.
It was the last blow to Russia in favor of its winter sports as a result of the country’s war against Ukraine. The decision of ice hockey comes from the cancellation of the annual international international figure skating competition in Russia.
The IIHF had previously announced the suspension of all Russian and Belarusian groups until further notice from international events.
“The IIHF is not a political organization and cannot influence the decisions being made about the war in Ukraine,” said IIHF President Luc Tardife. “However, we have a duty to care with all our members and participants, so we must do everything we can to ensure that our events can take place in a safe environment for all teams participating in the IIHF World Championship program.”
