Two Auckland men did not dispute shooting family car, killing man and injuring mother

AUCKLAND — Two Oakland men did not contest the killing of a 20-year-old man in a shooting that also wounded the victim’s mother, court records show.

Abdiel Guerrero, 27, and Selvin Peña, 24, did not contest the October 17 killing of 20-year-old Christian Casillas. They will be sentenced to 15 years to life in prison on Jan. 20, according to court records.

Casillas was shot dead on September 28, 2016, around 10:00 pm, while driving with his mother and father to the family home. East Auckland. Casillas’ mother and her father testified at a preliminary hearing in 2018 that two gunmen began shooting at their car, firing dozens of shots.

“The only thing I heard was Christian saying, ‘Mom, let’s go,’ and he covered his two brothers and his mother and ran home,” Casillas said. His father was a translator who testified through Spanish. Neither the mother nor the father were able to identify the perpetrator, according to court records.

Early in the drive, Casillas noticed the suspect’s car chasing him and told his parents to run away, his father testified.

Oakland Police Detective Chris McClane testified at a hearing that both Guerrero and Peña confessed to their involvement, but Peña told several versions of the same story. It is said that it was applied to the third crew member. In the end, according to Mr. McClane, he told police that both he and Guerrero opened fire, but someone else handed him the gun. “He closed his eyes and started firing at the victim’s car,” he said.

Peña told police that he and Guerrero accused Casillas (whom he only knew by street nicknames) for the previous shooting that killed one of his friends.

Nelson “Junior” Lopez, then 17, who was believed to be driving the victim, was charged as a juvenile, authorities said.
