German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach says he expects the release of a special vaccine against Omicron coronavirus will be delayed for months, until autumn.

Speaking as he attended a meeting of EU health ministers in Brussels, Lauterbach said: “September could be the planned month.”

The EU relies heavily on the mRNA COVID injection, specifically developed by the German company BioNTech in partnership with US giant Pfizer.

The Omicron specific vaccine is expected to be delivered earlier this year.

Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said in January his company would acquire one in March. And BioNTech founder Ugur Sahin said last month he expects it to be available in April or May.

As the European Union sees COVID hospitals and mortality decline after the success of the immunization program, new cases are confirmed to be on the rise again, thanks to the diffused Omicron variant.

Omicron, first discovered in southern Africa last November and rapidly spreading around the world, is now the largest variant, accounting for almost all new expressions.

It is a mutant that allows it to eliminate some of the protections provided by vaccines and from previous diseases, and comes in two major genes: BA.1 and BA.2, with the ultimate success.

While COVID vaccines developed for previous models have shown that they eliminate the negative health effects, they have proven to be much quieter in preventing infection in the first place.

This issue is even more important considering that the strength of the current vaccine is declining after a few monthswhich led to the election campaign.

BioNTech / Pfizer and mRNA rival Moderna both said at the end of January they had launched a clinical trial of the Omicron specific vaccine.

While the results have not yet been published, preliminary research on animals shows that “they do not provide any benefit beyond the current three-quarters of the vaccines,” according to an article in the journal Nature last month.

One reading, over eight rhesus macaquesfound that inhibitors from the original COVID vaccine and from the Omicron specification improved the immune response, but to no avail to the latter.
