‘I got them from a breeder in Texas, and when I moved to California, there were no rat breeders here.

‘That’s why I have so many, because I breed them for temperament, just to sell them to other people who love rats.

‘Then I stopped selling and now they are my pets, that’s why I have so many. There are many of them. ‘

Along with her 50 rats, Michele, who is an animal lover, has four dogs, three cats and two barges.

She said: ‘The barges live in a barn that is their small area, I feed the cats when I feed the dogs, so it is not a lot of work.

‘I love animals, I wanted to be a vet when I was growing up, but it never happened.

‘I would not call it an obsession, but because I love animals, I save a lot of animals.

When visitors enter Michele's house, they are often shocked by the number of rats they encounter, but Michele said her 'babies' will soon win them over.

‘I have a heart for her, so at the moment I have four German Shepherds – two that I bought as puppies, and two were rescue dogs.

‘I have a tendency to save animals, so my ex-husband calls me Dr Doolittle. I take care of them; I take them to the vet.

‘Before I had, two sheep, two goats, 25 hens and about 15 ducks and geese.

‘I was in the U.S. Army and was handicapped, so I took care of them by myself, and it became a lot, so I gave them to new homes.

‘I used to rescue cats, wild cats, I cared for them and brought them back. I really have a heart for animals. ‘

Michele once had two sheep, two goats, 25 hens and about 15 ducks and geese, but the US Army veteran was eliminated and could not take care of them himself.
